Why do you choose actuarial science?
I chose actuarial profession because it has its privilege to understand business better (see a lot of insurance company big guys are actuaries) by dealing with all functions and roles within the company, esp. for pricing actuaries and strategic planning actuaries. Plus actuarial profession is paid the best within the insurance companies.

If you are a Manager, what kind of actuarial staff will you hire? Skills Sets, personality?
I would like combination and diversity of the team. Some people should be good at technical stuff, following guidelines, and some should be good communicator, with good business sense and a little bit less “actuarial”.

University & Program: University of Waterloo – Actuarial Science and Statistics
Co-op experience: No
SOA Exam: 6 exams

Why do you choose actuarial science?
When I made my decision, the only reason making me to choose actuarial science is because this major is in Mathematics department, which is my favorite. But later on, I figured out many good reasons to choose this career, so… if everything started over, I would choose this major again for the following reasons:
1) High reputation (I can tell this from people’s faces when I tell them I am learning actuarial science ;P)
2) No salary cap which means for those talents and workaholics they can earn as much as they can
3) More stable compared to other career which makes it more attractive during the recession period
4) Fantastic opportunities in Asia especially in China, but this advantage won’t last long...

How do you know about this profession?
Recommended by my friend

Where do you do your research on this profession?
SOA website. I am trying to find a professional magazine for Actuaries, but
haven’t found any.

Why you choose your university in the first place?
High reputation of Actuarial Science in North America.

What is your career path?
Become FSA first
Get various work experience in Life insurance industry. Decide the area in which I would like to become an expert. Then spend the rest of my life on it…=)
look for opportunities in Asia after becoming FSA

Do you have any other educational background other than Actuarial?
Yes, Engineering. But don’t feel it’s helpful up to now…

If you are a Manager, what kind of actuarial staff will you hire? Skills Sets, personality?
I would like to hire somebody who has the similar personality as me. In terms of skills, I prefer someone who is precise and hard working to the person having a lot of skills but doesn’t like the position at all.

From your experience, how do you manage to study for exam while you are working full time?
Improve my work efficiency so that I can leave the office a little bit earlier everyday and spend more time on study during the week days. For weekend, spend at least one day on study.

How the company have support you in passing your exam and manage your workload?
The company pays all the expenses on exams including text books, study manual and exam registration fee subject to some conditions. For the workload, my opinion is that the company does not manage the workload for actuarial students (except the study days). It’s the responsibility of the students to manage their workload. Thus, taking a right position in the right department and company when writing exams is very important!!!

How do you enrich yourself during leisure time?
Still writing exams, so don’t have a lot leisure time =( But if I had, I would like to do a lot of travel, spend enough time in gym and watch many movies... basically, everything
